The challenge

Day-trippers were overwhelming Venice's historic center while residents left.

The case

In 2024 Venice became the first city to charge day visitors an entry fee, €5 on 29 peak days, checked with QR codes. There were 485,062 payments, bringing in €2.4 million. In 2025 the fee ran on 54 days and rose to €10 for people who booked at the last minute; 723,497 visitors paid, raising €5,421,425. But day visitor numbers dropped only slightly compared with 2024. Critics, including many residents, say a few euros is small next to the cost of a trip, and that the fee does nothing about cruise ships or the loss of residents.

Why the results were mixed

A fee this low raises some money and data but doesn't change where people go. Managing crowds likely needs caps, booking systems or much higher prices, alongside keeping housing for residents.
